Moving with Pets: 8 Must-Try Tips for Success

You have booked your commercial movers. Your packing checklist is all set.

Your movers truck arrives in a few days for shifting. You are excited to move to your new place.

But wait..is that everything?

Or are you forgetting something?

Oh, Yes.

In all the moving excitement you forgot that moving with pets is a bit different than moving with your family alone.

Our pets take comfort in their own routines. They find it difficult adjusting with change and all the moving hassle.

But there are a few steps which you can take to make moving with pets as smooth as possible.

1. Make them familiar with packing supplies

Pets can have real problems when they find any unexpected activity at home.

When you are planning your move everything starts changing.

There are boxes in the whole house. Strangers are coming in and out to take away the furniture.

Instead of directly taking out a lot of boxes at the time of packing. Take out boxes a few days before. Put them in the corner of the house and let the pets sniff the smell and desensitise.

Also try to make them familiar with the sound of packing tape and moving furniture.

2. Keep a routine while moving with pets

Avoid changing their daily routine during the move.

We all have our habits and pets can feel really uncomfortable when their routines are changed.

If they have a meal at a certain time of the day, keep the timings the same no matter how busy you are. Don’t pack away stuff that comforts your pets until the moving day.

3. Keep pets entertained

Give them the attention they require throughout the day. Do not leave them all by themselves because they are used to you being around them.

Avoid skipping walk days and play time. Adjust your schedule accordingly so they do not feel left out while moving to a new place.

Spend time cuddling and playing so that they know that their bond with you still remains the same even with the changing environment.

4. Keep a secluded place for pets

Empty boxes, piles of clothes, your whole house looks like a mountain of clutter during a move. Between all this mess, keep a room or corner clean and organised for your pets.

Keep their toys and blanket somewhere away from all the noise and hustle so they do not get distrubed. But be sure to keep checking upon them from time to time.

If you have a small space and you cannot take out a secluded part of home for them during the move, it is ideal to keep them at a friend or family member’s place.

5. Get in touch with your vet

Inform your vet that you will be moving and take records of any prescriptions or medications needed.

Ask them if they can help you recommend any other vet in your new neighbourhood.

Check if all the vaccinations are up to date. Make sure you carry all the vaccination documents safely to the new place as well.

Make scanned copies of important documents of your pets as well, in case you lose original ones during the moves.

6. Do not take your pet out of vehicle until arrival

Do not take your pet outside until you have reached inside the new house. Since they are moving to a new neighbourhood these curious creatures can easily get lost.

Even if the pet is well behaved, do not let them outside the vehicle.

Let them transition in the new neighbourhood gradually.

7. Be informed about pet laws at new place

Do your research and check out all the pet related laws and regulations in your apartment or building.

If you have rented a place do not surprise the new owners about your pet on the day of move. Inform them beforehand so they have made up their minds and explained to you any rules they might have.

Make sure your pet is welcomed to any new place you would be moving to.

8. Pet-proof your new place before arrival

A new place can have unexpected windows, gates, doors, balconies and railings that you might have missed on your visits while doing a tour of the house.

Especially scan the whole house for any potential hazards for the pets.

Check all the toilet lids so pets don’t fall in them as they are used to their old bathrooms. Make sure all vents and AC ducts are closed.

Check for any poisonous plants in the backyard. Look out for any dangerous electrical cords and switches.

Conclusion

Your pet should feel homely in your new place. The transition process must be gradual for them to make themselves feel safe in the new environment.

Make them have small walks around the new house so they can sniff and recognize new smells.

Give them a lot of attention so they don’t feel that you have abandoned them.

Try to keep the routine regular and hire professional movers who can take care of your needs while moving with pets.
